Few Flags for Kaiser Workers
The flag is another vivid reminder of the terrorist attack. Americans have been flying flags from their doorsteps. And pinning them to their clothes.
But some Kaiser Aluminum workers say they've been told not to wear the flag. One worker wanted to wear a flag patch on his shirt, another said he just wanted to put a sticker on his hard hat.
Baseball players are wearing flags on their uniforms, Americans everywhere are wearing red, white and blue ribbons.
Steve Frank works for Kaiser, "In the past week and a half... I've seen the entire country come together for the first time in a long time, and basically, I felt I wanted to be a part of that and this was one of the ways I did that by wearing the flag and the ribbons."
Frank wore his flag to work at Kaiser and he says he can't believed what happened next, "After I had it on half the day, I was ordered by two of the company foremen there to remove it from my shirt, they didn't like it on a Kaiser work shirt is what they said."
Steve Sims says he ran into the same problem, "My thumbs were bigger than those flags were."
Sims had placed two small stickers on his hard hat, "I was looking at the patriotism, the whole nation attacked, I'm patriotic, always have been, always believed in this country and wanted to show it."
These workers say they were told it's against Kaiser policy to put stickers on their hard hats. But they hoped in the wake of what happened September 11th, the company might compromise.
Dan Russell also works for Kaiser, "Let's just say that you can have a flag on each side of your hard hat, 1 inch by 2 inches and anything beyond that is a violation of the rule, and they said no, because if we give you an inch, you'll take a mile."
We tried to reach kaiser officials several times, but our calls were not returned
