SPOKANE-The pollutants of concern that can be emitted from the pot rooms of the Kaiser Mead plant near Spokane include particulate matter, gaseous fluoride and sulfur dioxide.
The toxins mentioned in yesterday's news release are problems at other types of aluminum smelters, such as the Kaiser plant in Tacoma. They were mistakenly attributed to Kaiser's plant in Mead.
The company's Tacoma plant uses "soderberg" pots to bake the anodes at the facility. By contrast, the Mead plant uses pre-baked anodes.
