The biennial convention of the state's largest state employees union, the Washington Federation of State Employees AFSCME/AFL-CIO, will take place this weekend in Tacoma.

The 19,000-member federation will begin its conference with a banquet Friday. The convention brings together some 400 delegates and alternates who will debate the union's course over the next two years.

Gov. Gary Locke is scheduled to speak at the convention Friday evening at the Sheraton Tacoma Hotel. Saturday, a group of Kaiser Aluminum Steelworkers will speak to the group. Labor leader Gerald McEntee, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Workers, also will address the group.
