Kaiser adds energy surcharge to fabricated products

NEW YORK, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Kaiser Aluminum Corp subsidiary Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. said it imposed a temporary energy surcharge to all products made by its flat-rolled products and engineered products business units, that will remain in effect until further notice.

It said a $0.019 per pound surcharge will be applied to all orders shipped on or after January 2001, regardless of order entry date.

Jack Hockema, President of Kaiser's fabricated businesses, said the company added the surcharge because energy prices associated with production of fabricated products have been escalating rapidly.

``During the past year, we absorbed these increases, but now find it necessary to pass on a portion of these costs. We will continue to monitor our energy costs, and will modify or cancel this surcharge as appropriate,'' Hockema added.
