Right in our backyard is an aluminum smelter, the Mead plant of Kaiser Aluminum. It has a recent record of fines for excessive pollution and other environmental violations. But it’s not just any pollution.

It includes the kinds of chemicals that can, in sufficient concentration, do harm to people, particularly the young and old.

The Mead Plant has a facility – the “Carbon Baking Furnace” – whose recent performance includes numerous, excessive releases of toxic chemicals.
